Community of practice definition. Community a self selected group of individuals who care enough about the topic to participate in regular interactions. While the domain provides the general area of interest for the community the practice is the specific focus around which the community develops shares and maintains its core of collective knowledge. It applies to a street gang whose members learn how to survive in a hostile world. This definition reflects the fundamentally social nature of human learning.
Such groups are held together by the members desire to help others by sharing information and the need to advance their own knowledge by learning from others. Also called community of interest. Informal self organized network of peers with diverse skills and experience in an area of practice or profession. It is therefore this collective social practice that links individuals together across official organizational boundaries and departments and makes up the community.
A cop in contrast is a group of people who are active practitioners. They develop a shared repertoire of resources. The community of practice sometimes incorrectly referred to as communities of practices consists of members who interact with each other for their pursuit of a common practice. A community of practice is a group of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do.
Members of a community of practice are practitioners. This definition reflects the fundamentally social nature of human learning. Cop participation is not appropriate for non practitioners. A community of practice is not merely a community of interest people who like certain kinds of movies for instance.
